The 415 area code’s supply of blocks of phone numbers, to issue to carriers to serve you, is running low. To ensure that new numbers are available for customers and technology expansion, the California Public Utilities Commission has begun the process to introduce a new area code to the geography now served by the 415. The new area code added to the 415 will be 628.

408 Area Code: Another area code -669- will be added to the same area now serving the 408 area. Referred to as an overlay, both area codes will serve the same area. After October 20, 2012, all calls made from the 408 area code must be made by dialing 1+area code+seven digit telephone number. In November, 2012, new services may be assigned the new area code.
